WP6

The primary objective of WP6 is to provide environmental data products on air pollution and meteorological conditions to stakeholders: (i) citizens; (ii) citizens’ groups; (iii) policy makers; and (iv) GMES.
The secondary objectives are to provide: (i) a tested methodology to link the “products” and “users” elements in the chain “sensors-platform-products-users”; and (ii) the foundation for a quantitative error analysis of environmental data products on air pollution and meteorology, including application of data fusion/data assimilation ideas to enhance current observational networks and databases.
The elements of the chain “sensors-platform-products-users” are defined by the work in WPs 8, 7, 6, and 5, respectively, and their integration is described in WP 4.
The empowerment initiatives are defined and described in WPs 2-3; these empowerment initiatives (EIs) are: (i) Urban quality (WP 2); (ii) Public Spaces (WP 3); and (iii) Indoor Environment in Schools (WP 3).
WP 6 will address the following three key elements of the call:
(i) Enhancement of observing capabilities – by providing timely in situ quantitative information from mobile phone platforms to stakeholders; and by testing and developing data fusion/data assimilation concepts to add value to this information;
(ii) Development of effective and efficient communication solutions for transfer of environmental data products from mobile phone devices to stakeholders, including development of middleware and establishment of sustainable services – by using empowerment initiatives to test, implement and demonstrate communication solutions for transfer of environmental data products;
(iii) Empowerment of stakeholders – by providing a tested methodology to enable stakeholders to access environmental data products and interact with providers of these products.
WP 6 will extend the state-of-the-art by testing the application of data fusion/data assimilation ideas to add value to the environmental and meteorological information received by citizens. This is expected to open up opportunities toward the use of hitherto unexploited information, extend the range of information available to citizens at the individual level, and involve citizens in the provision of information relevant to them.
